Celestron 52302 Regal Refractor 80mm F-ED Spotting Scope
Celestron’s Regal 80 F-ED Zoom Spotting Scope offers high end optics in a medium priced spotting scope. The “Fluoro ED” glass objective lens virtually eliminates the false color or blue fringing commonly seen with traditional achromatic lenses. With its Fluoro-ED optics and Multi-Coated zoom lens the Regal 80 F-ED delivers images that compare with more expensive ED and Fluorite spotting scopes.
Conventional achromatic scopes seem to lose sharpness at high power because different colors come to focus at slightly different points, this is known as “chromatic aberration.” The Regal 80 F-ED with its Fluoro-ED objective lens overcomes this problem and gives me images that are delightfully crisp and clear. When I’m looking at backyard birds at 20X magnification the view is so sharp it’s like holding a bird in my hand. When I look at the Moon at 60X, I can easily pick out detail and identify hundreds of craters.
The Regal 80 F-ED features a sleek, waterproof design and includes a padded soft case with zippers on both ends so the scope can be protected even while mounted on a tripod. With the 20-60X zoom eyepiece the Regal 80 F-ED measures about 19 inches long and weighs just over 4 pounds. A “T-thread” adapter is included for attaching a camera. I like the 45* angled eyepiece because I can use a shorter tripod to support the spotting scope while viewing or while taking pictures with a digital camera.
The dual-speed focus knobs allow really sharp focusing anywhere from 20 feet to the horizon. The twist-up eyecup allows me to see a generous 2.1 degree field of view at 20X, even while wearing glasses. Sometimes though I like to take my glasses off while observing because the view seems to have just a little more contrast and sharpness. I like the fact that the Regal 80 F-ED gives me a sharp image either way.
Celestron’s Regal 80 F-ED Zoom Spotting Scope combines sharp multicoated optics with a good quality zoom lens in a compact waterproof package. Top it off with a lifetime “No-Fault” warranty and the Celestron Regal 80 F-ED is simply a great value. --Jeff Phillips
Pros:
- Sharp multi-coated optics

I wanted to buy a spotting scope for day & occasional astro viewing. This scope is brilliantly made, easy to use and has pretty good optics. You will need a tripod of course due to its weight. I searched reviews of various spotting scopes & this Celestron Regal 80mm is perfect for bird watching and spying on objects miles away. The moon looks amazing and I picked out all four moons of Jupiter and saw the planets' banding easily. Lifetime replacement warranty, quality optics, excellent price and can be used for digi-scope photography. The workmanship was far better than I expected; you will not regret buying one of these beauties. It came packaged real well & made it all the way to New Zealand in perfect condition. Very swift service from Amazon and the retailer. Get one....set-up in seconds for hours of viewing pleasure!

As far as operation of the scope it's Excellent. Has great clairity of objects at 300 to 400 yards. Operation of Spotting scope is easy with the coarse & fine focus knobs.
Only draw back is soft case that's included with spotting scope,It fitted way to tight. Contacted Celestron & within approximittly 6 weeks I had a new replacement case that fits just fine.
Overall I highly reccomend this scope, for it's price it's by far A BEST DEAL. Celestron Customer Service was Personable enough to resolve the case issue. Keep in mind, the Scope & Case are manufactured in CHINA.
Wish I could have afforded JAPANESE,AUSTRIAN,or AMERICAN made optics, this was my best compromise.

Sadly, the scope arrived with an optical problem. I didn't return it to the seller, but called the factory. They confirmed that it was defective, and advised that in cases like this, replacement was typically the procedure. They paid return shipping, so I returned it to them. After they received the scope, I called to see when a new replacement would be shipped, and was advised that it could either be repaired or replaced, and as per the warranty, that could take up to 30 days!
Further, since I didn't return the scope to the seller first, they told me today that they can't accept it as a return if the replacement doesn't work properly. They did offer to act on my behalf with the manufacturer if there are future issues though.
Read this product's warranty thoroughly--especially the coverage of collimation and optical alignment issues.
Perhaps my dissappointment and the prospect of a long delay are jading my review, but I believe that a broken out of the box product should simply be replaced quickly. After all, why should the customer have to bear the burden of a build issue on a brand new product?

Once an error by Celestron concerning the return date was rectified, a new replacement scope was shipped immediately. The replacement had a focus binging issue, and it was also sent back. Celestron was very responsive and shipped a new scope the same day that the return was received. At this scope's price point, it looks like there are some quality control issues (esp. with the focusing mechanism), but these are covered by the warranty, and the Technical Services personnel are very responsive. They do stand behind their product.
Optically, this scope is great! It will hold its own with the high-dollar spotters. Detail is very sharp, loosing very little at 60X. I can easily see oak leaf veining at over 300 feet in mine. Chromatic abberation is extremely well controlled. I see little to none even at 60X in high-contrast situations. The eyepiece is also first class. I see nothing to fault with it.
I purchased my scope from Adorama (through Amazon), and these folks are a really class act. They have been in business forever, and customer service really appears to mean something to them--highly recommended!
I have changed my rating from two to four stars based on Celestron's support and the optical performance. The coarse focus does need refining though--so consider that too.
